چکیده

We investigate the nonlinear dynamics of turbulent shear flows, with and without rotation, in the context of a simple but physically motivated closure of the equation governing the evolution of the Reynolds stress tensor. We show that the model naturally accounts for some familiar phenomena in parallel shear flows, such as the subcritical transition to turbulence at a finite Reynolds number and the occurrence of a universal velocity profile close to a wall at large Reynolds number. For rotating shear flows we find that, depending on the Rayleigh discriminant of the system, the model predicts either linear instability or nonlinear instability or complete stability as the Reynolds number is increased to large values. We investigate the properties of Couette–Taylor flows for varying inner and outer cylinder rotation rates and identify the region of linear instability (similar to Taylor’s), as well as regions of finiteamplitude instability qualitatively compatible with recent experiments. We also discuss quantitative predictions of the model in comparison with a range of experimental torque measurements. Finally, we consider the relevance of this work to the question of the hydrodynamic stability of astrophysical accretion disks.

Assessment of Turbulent Models in Computation of Strongly Curved Open Channel Flows

Several rigorous turbulent models have been developed in the past years and it can be seen that more research is needed to reach a better understanding of their generality and precision by verifying their applications for distinct hydraulic phenomena; under certain assumptions. This survey evaluates the performance of Standard k-ε, Realizable k-ε, RNG k-ε, k-ω and RSM models in predicting flow ...

2DV Nonlinear k-ε Turbulence Modeling of Stratified Flows

The commonly used linear k-ε turbulence model is shown to be incapable of accurate prediction of turbulent flows, where non-isotropy is dominant. Two examples of non-isotropic flows, which have a wide range of applications in marine waters, are saline water flow and the stratified flows due to temperature gradients. These relate to stratification and consequently, variation of density through...

A low-dimensional model for turbulent shear flows

We analyse a low-dimensional model for turbulent shear flows. The model is based on Fourier modes and describes sinusoidal shear flow, in which the fluid between two free-slip walls experiences a sinusoidal body force. The model contains a total of nine modes, including modes describing the basic mean velocity profile and its modification, downstream vortices, streaks, and instabilities of stre...

Numerical Simulation of Separation Bubble on Elliptic Cylinders Using Three-equation k-? Turbulence Model

Occurrence of laminar separation bubbles on solid walls of an elliptic cylinder has been simulated using a recently developed transitional model for boundary layer flows. Computational method is based on the solution of the Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations and the eddy-viscosity concept. Transitional model tries to simulate streamwise fluctuations, induced by freestream turbulen...

MULTI PHASE COMPUTATIONAL FLUID DYNAMICS MODELING OF CAVITATING FLOWS OVER AXISYMMETRIC HEAD-FORMS

In the present paper, partial cavitation over various head-forms was studied numerically to predict the shape of the cavity. Navier-Stokes equations in addition to an advection equation for vapor volume fraction were solved. Mass transfer between the phases was modeled by a sink term in vapor equation in the numerical analysis for different geometries in wide range of cavitation numbers. The r...
